How Do Edges Affect Photos?
Edges are really important in photos. Without them you wouldn't have a main subject to focus on. Edges stop you from seeing what's behind the subject because photos are flat.
My Photos Inspired By Edges
My Edges Photos that I made with paper
ALEXANDER RODCHENKO
This is one of my favourite pieces by Alexander Rodchenko. He is a photgrapher, graphic designer and sculptor who came from Russia.
This photograph is interesting to me because he chose a smart angle to take it from, he took it by facing the camera up and I don't think other photographers would think to take it in this position. This second photograph is similar to the first one, it has loads of lines in it going in different angles some are curved, some are straight, some are vertical. I love the fact that he added a person in this photograph. The picture feels silent since there is only one person in the image.
These images have really inspired me to take some of my own photos and improve on the ones I've already taken. I'm going to put more thought into my photos and make them more abstract.

Looking Up , Looking Down
My WritingThe first photo was taken from below with the camera facing upwards, the second photo was taken from above with the camera facing downwards they both have similar aspects in their photos for example, both contain people in their photographs and both have edges. In the first photo there are loads of examples of edges like, the windows in the second there are also edges for example the benches. What I like about these photos are that the photographs look like they were taken without no one knowing about them, they look natural. If I were to make pictures inspired by these photographs I think I would take them in the same angle as these were taken in and interpret loads of angles in them, I would also then edit them in black and white. |

My Edges Drawing
In this photography lesson we were told to copy out the photographs that are on the left. We were supposed to draw what we saw. I had some difficulties when drawing the second one because it was really confusing there was loads of shapes so I struggled however I kept persistent.
Edges Assessment
Stage One.
We were told to pick five images that had something in common, like a theme. So I picked these five. I picked these five because they all had a bit of blue and a beige colour.
Questions
- What decisions did you make when choosing the five photographs from a larger pile? How did you arrange them on the table for photographing? Which arrangement worked the best? What kinds of edges did you notice?
When I was choosing my five photographs I was going for a theme, My theme was that every photo had a bit of blue and beige in them. When I picked my five photos to take a photo of them I arranged them in a kind of staircase position, It had a lot of of edges in them, in the photos and around the photos.
2. Where did you choose to rephotograph one or two of these images? Which locations worked best? Explain which is your favourite photograph of a photograph? What's strange about photographing photographs? What kind of edges did you notice?
I rephotographed the chair photo with a background that had some blue in it so they complimented each other. My favourite photograph I took was of the two chairs that had the words difficulty behind them.
Stage Two.
My class, and I had to pick two of our favourite pictures out of the five and photograph them in different places so I picked these two.

I liked the way how some of the photos turned out, my favourites were the ones that had colour schemes.
|
If I were to do this again, I think I would be a bit more experimental. For example, pournig water on one of the photos.
|
Stage Three.
|
Using the five photos we chose last lesson, we built a sculpture out of them.

If I were to do this again, I think I would make it more interesting and confusing by adding more detail.
|
I am really proud of the outcome of this sculpture, I did not know it would end up looking like this however. I really like it.
|
Stage Four.
In this lesson I went outside to take a photo for the background so I could photoshop my sculpture in it, after adding my sculpture into the photo I also added a photo of a person looking at the sculpture to make it look more realistic.
To make my photo more realistic I added a person to the sculpture, I took a photo of my friend facing a blank wall and photographed her then cropped the white background using photoshop and then added her to the photo with the sculpture in it. My idea behind this was to make it look like she was looking at the sculpture.
Stage Five.
In this lesson we had a writing assessment. We had to write about two photographs and their similarities and differences.
Paragraph One
Frank's photograph's is black and white.I can see that he had taken two separate photos before and merged them together later. Frank's work is portrait because you can see somebody's hand in one of the mirrors as a reflection. I love this piece because of how many edges it includes and how much detail he put into his work. There are a wide range of shapes including triangles, squares and circles. Looking at Vitturis's piece you can see the photo is colourful and is full of a wide range of edges and shapes. I find it really shocking how Vitturi managed to come up with such an amazing, abstract photograph. Vitturi's work is a portrait, the sculpture that he made looks like a person. Both Vitturi's and Frank's works are complicated and abstract.
Paragraph Two
The main similarities in Vitturi's and Frank's work are that they are both full of small details for example in Frank's one there are a lot of details in the mirrors like paint splotches and engravings. In Vitturi's work there's a lot going on in the low ground, there's fruit and thread everywhere. The places that I find most interesting in both pieces are first in Frank's one there is a hand holding some sort of robot/skeleton and I feel like that is a nice detail to add. In Vitturi's piece the place I find most interesting is in fact the whole sculpture, I find it really interesting and shocking how Vitturi made such an illusion.
Paragraph Three
I can see loads of examples of edges in these two photos. In Frank's piece 'Sick of goodbys' there are a lot of mirrors, In Vitturi's photo there are many different shapes like, the coconuts. If I could ask any questions to both of these artists these are the ones I would ask,
Paragraph Four
If I was the one who took these photos, I would call Frank's black and white photo 'Dead' because of how dark and sad it is. I would name Vitturi's work 'Trade' because of the backstory of the photo. If I were stuck in Frank's photograph, I would have a lot of fear and anxiety in there because of how dark and sad the photo is. Although, in Vitturi's photo I'd be more chilled out because of how calm it looks like. I think these photographers took these photos to let their emotions out in a photo. Frank's photo has more of a personal twist to his photograph I think he was maybe suffering from depression when taking this photo, his photo is called 'sick of goodbys' so he may have lost a lot of people during that time. So in conclusion stuff happens and every artwork has a backstory to it.

Showcase - Homework
For my homework this week I needed to make a showcase to showcase all of my photography work.Firstly I went searching for an area and I found these cool gates to showcase my work so I recorded the adress.Secondly, I made a poster by cutting out single letters from magazines and sticking it on a yellow card then I went to a library to print of the card I made into loads of posters,Then I stuck those posters around the area with a friend that helped me. Lastly I hoasted the showcase.

I wish I had more time to do the exhibition. If I could do it again, I would've of printed my photos off on A3 paper and I would have documented more of the process.

I wasn't really proud of how this exhibition turned out. However, I really liked the way my posters turned out.

The poster reminded me of my dads old posters. I wish there could of been more photos and could of linked to the setting In some kind of way.

I really like your collaged poster which reminds me of Dadaism and punk posters. The location for your exhibition is interesting. It would be nice to see more pictures of the work on show. Well done!

Edges Project
My class and I have been doing our own personal projects that had to be linked to the theme, edges. For my project I have been creating and collecting random photos, then turning them into black and white photos. After I collect enough photos I think I'm going to make a collage out if them.
Final Edges Evaluation
Which artists have you researched during the edges project?
- One artist that I have researched during my final edges project was, Lorenzo Vitturi. He inspired me to do a collage with photos I have collected for my final edges project.
